COMMUNITY WORK AT AN ORPHANAGE IN LIMATAMBO Work in a Rural Community to Help the Lives of OrphansThe Limatambo Orphanage is located approximately two and a half hours outside of Cusco in a tropical valley. The orphanage consists of seven houses with about eight to ten family members in each house (children and substitute parents). The children in this program are generally sent here by a minor court judge and may have had difficult backgrounds, from sexual abuse to gangs to poverty. The orphanage also contains a medical center for the surrounding communities and livestock and crops to help feed the children.
There is a small local school that children from the Orphanage, Limatambo village and five communities in the area attend. As a volunteer, participants can work in a wide variety of capacities. Volunteers may be a teaching assistant at the school or give lessons, or help at the medical center assisting with treatment for the community residents. The orphanage also needs general help such as carpentry, construction, cooking, and feeding the animals. If volunteers feel comfortable, volunteers will have the chance to present a proposal of a workshop or work to be done during the volunteer’s time there.
Volunteer Activities May Include: • Assist teaching and giving lessons in a wide variety of subjects like math, art and English • Work at the medical center, helping with basic treatments • Aid children in completing their homework • Feed and take care of livestock and gardens on the grounds • Help build and do carpentry work on the buildings themselves • Cooking meals and feeding the orphans
