COMMUNITY WORK AT A KINDERGARTEN IN CUSCO
Travel to the Andes Mountains to help teach young children
Peru, home of the great Inca Empire, is a country of deep history and culture. It is a magical location that contains one of the richest biodiversities on Earth. Peru is the third biggest country in South America and it ranges from the beautiful coast line to the spectacular Andes mountains and down again to the dense Amazon River basin.
The culture of Peru is comprised of the multicultural layers of many great civilizations. The heritage of the Inca’s has been passed down not only by their spectacular ruins but also with the Quechua language, which is still spoken in many areas of the country. You can wander the around colonial cities which have preserved the legacy of the Spanish conquistadors. You will be able to explore the lost city of Machu Picchu and ponder the enigma of the Nazca Lines.
This project offers the opportunity to travel to Cusco, one of the most prominent historical cities in South America, to help improve the education and well-being for children age’s two to five.
More than 30 students attend this day care and kindergarten. Generally, they come from poor families that work in the market where the school is located. The school itself still has poor infrastructure and lacks an array of items and opportunities it needs to be a better center of learning.
As a teaching assistant, participants can help take steps towards improving the children’s well-being and education. Participants spend time with the children, playing, singing, feeding and taking care of them. In the free time they have away from the school, participants will have a chance to explore the city of Cusco, including a walking tour of this landmark city of the Incan empire. Volunteers live with families in Cusco who have been specially selected for the program and have a great interest in sharing their culture and also learning about yours.
