HELP PROVIDE AN IMPOVERISHED POPULATION WITH MEANS AND KNOWLEDGE TO IMPROVE THEIR SITUATION.

Make a Difference is a program based in a small community center in the famous neighborhood of La Boca, Buenos Aires.  This community center is a non-profit organization that provides a safe and positive place for youth to learn, grow and play.  Although the colorful neighborhood of La Boca is a tourist attraction, it is also quite impoverished and few children enjoy the benefits of a secondary education.  The main goal of this project is to teach young people that they are an important part of Argentinean society and that they can be productive, happy human beings.  The center teaches that big changes in life can be brought about by small differences.  The project also boasts a small shop for the making of Alfajores (a traditional Argentinean biscuit) that are then sold to tourists visiting the neighborhood.

Volunteers in this program will have a chance to work in all areas of the project, which is comprised of a recreational center for the children, various workshops for children, adolescents and adults, an Alfajores shop and a souvenir shop.  Work in the most important area, the workshops, include helping with English classes (very important), homework support and classes to teach adults how to read and write.  The center sells the Alfajores and small souvenirs in order to help finance the other projects.  Volunteers are also welcome to work in these two areas, which give the children a great opportunity to interact with the tourists as well as practice their English.

Volunteer activities may include:

  • Teaching English to children, teens and adults
  • Helping the children with their homework
  • Coordinate courses to teach adults how to read and write
  • Help the local staff in the recreational center
  • Help coordinate various workshops for children, teenagers and adults
  • Help with the administration and marketing of the souvenir shop
  • Work with local mothers in the production of Alfajores
  • Being a positive role model and cultural ambassador

All GeoVisions programs include accommodation and meals (2 meals/day), airport pick-up, project training, in country support, medical insurance, extensive pre-departure information and project orientation.
