TEACH ENGLISH TO CHILDREN AND TEENS IN CHILE AND GET PAID A LOCAL STIPEND

Chile is a country of startling contrasts and extreme beauty, with attractions ranging from the towering volcanic peaks of the Andes to the ancient forests of the Lake District. There are a multitude of very good parks and plenty of opportunities for fine adventure travel. Chile is justly famous as the location of Torres del Paine, considered by many to be the finest nature travel destinations in all of South America.

This program, launched in 2004 by the Ministry of Education in Chile, incorporated the volunteer component to create real opportunities for both teachers and students to practice English.   The volunteer aspect of the program focuses its attention on the participation of a volunteer native speaker of English to collaborate with Chilean EFL teachers, and help them motivate their students by the exchange of intercultural experiences.  For teachers, the volunteer is a real support in the classroom, and in many cases, the only chance to practice with an English speaker.  Volunteers are also expected to develop conversational workshops, and other related initiatives to serve and assist the school and local community.  The success of the program has been reflected in the increasing number of volunteers year after year and the positive feedback from local communities, host families, schools and society in general.

To participate in the program, teachers must be native speakers of English or use English in their everyday language.  It would be especially helpful if yoapplicants have a basic knowledge of Spanish.

Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree, be between 20 to 50 years old as of March 1, 2008.  English teaching and/or TEFL certification is a plus.  Applicants do not need to be certified teachers.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Work as an English teaching assistant in the classroom for 25 hours a week to motivate students to learn English by leading lessons and activities that focus on developing English listening and speaking abilities.
  • Work an additional 10 hours a week planning lessons and leading extra-curricular activities to motivate the entire school community to learn English, and engage in a cultural exchange.

All GeoVisions programs include accommodation and meals, airport pick-up, project training, in country support, medical insurance, extensive pre-departure information and project orientation.
