Help Me Teach
September 19, 2008
TEACHING A FAMILY IN SPAIN
Hi Jane, My name is Adam Mastroianni and I am (almost!) ready to embark on my teaching experience in Zaragoza, Spain. Marybeth instructed me to email you and perhaps you could send me a few ideas on teaching. The family consists of a Mother (who can basically already speak English- I think she just wants practice speaking), a Father who (I believe....has no interest in learning!...sounds like a busy man!); and two sons 11 and 13 years old who have a school level of knowledge in English. I have been in close contact with the family almost everyday, and they are extremely nice. The two boys have interest in Tennis and Music, so I've brought some magazines/books accordingly. I also went to my local AAA dealer and got some random magazines and brochures about various locations around the US, figuring that would also be an interest topic for them to learn about (new locations and monuments). Do you have any other suggestions for children this age? Any books in particular or games you'd suggest? I'd appreciate any help you can! I'm sorry this is last minute, as I'm leaving on Tuesday, but I hope you can send me a few quick suggestions! Thanks a lot and have a great day, Adam

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS FOR SPAIN
Hi, My name is Ashley and I will be going to Spain with Geovisions in September to work with two adults in Albacete. The adults are interested in learning all areas of the English language, mostly conversational. I have been told their current skill level is "advanced basic." I have never taught English as a Second Language and could certainly use some advice and/or suggestions regarding teaching ideas, strategies, and activities. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

TEACHING TO A FAMILY
I would like more information on how to teach my family. The father and mother are both in their 50s and the two daughters are 20 years old. The father understands some English (enough to have conversations with me), and the mother knows little English. The daughters understand a little English as well.
We will be having formal classes everyday for one hour. We will be working on pronunciations a lot, as the father has made that request.
If you have any ideas, then that would be much appreciated!

TEACHING GRAMMAR OR VOCABULARY SEEMS BORING
Hello, My name is Ben and I am leaving for Madrid, Spain in about a week to begin the Conversation Corps. program. I recieved the assignment and it said that the goal was to teach English to an 11 year old boy. As I have no prior teaching experience, I am a little nervous about how to begin teaching a language and was directed to this email for some ideas. I am assuming, tentatively, that since he is only 11 he would have basic to no English experience at all. I have been taking Spanish for a couple years now and I was thinking about bringing the text books I have and working almost backwards. I believe this would work, but I feel like the difficult concepts in going from English to Spanish are much different than going from Spanish to English. Also, since I have never done this before, should I be teaching him through traditional, formal grammar and vocabulary lessons? I keep having to remind myself that he is after all only 11 and to spend summer days memorizing grammar doesn't sound like something to be thrilled about. I would like some advice/approaches on how/what the best way is to present English to a young beginner. Also, what are the most important topics to cover?
Thank you for your time, Benjamin

CREATING LESSON PLANS
Hi, I just got into Madrid for the geovisions conversation corp. The family has had other people come and do this before, but the level of english is still very very low. there are 4 children, 3 boys 1 girl ranging between about 6-12 years old. I only have a few ideas for games and I have never developed a lesson plan before in my life. I was wondering if you could provide any insight or suggestions for teaching english. Thank you, Rebecca
