Cuba: Connecting With People and Culture
Cuba and the U.S. have agreed to people-to-people exchange as the basis for American travel in Cuba. That's my favorite kind of travel.
In February, Maggie, from South Ayrshire, Scotland, traveled to Cuba through GeoVisions. Here's her advice to others thinking of visiting the Caribbean Island, which is located 90 miles off the coast of Key West, Florida.
First of all, I would tell others thinking of going to Cuba with GeoVisions is yes- do it now!
As a mature person not far from 70 years old, I’m still very active, curious and love to travel and meet new people. I got to do all of this when I traveled to Cuba. I decided to visit Cuba because I think it will change in the coming years with more and more people visiting there.
The people are genuinely friendly and hospitable. There are a few scammers, but nothing major.
The Cuban staff running GeoVision's Connecting People & Culture program in Havana could not have been more helpful. It was really lovely and nothing was too much bother. Thank you Leonel, Leandro, Renee, Rita, Marilyn and all the others!
- Go to the Spanish classes. They are relaxed and fun. There were mixed ages and we all helped one another.
- Salsa classes could be very hot and sweaty, but again great fun.
- I wish I had traveled more, but time prevented this. Others who had gone to other parts of the island raved about them.
- Ask to stay in a casa particular, not in the hostel if you want a bit of piece and quiet. Some of the casas are very comfortable with en suite facilities.
- Try the cigars and rum.
