[Updated 21 March, 2022.]

Our in-class TESOL courses are full steam ahead in Costa Rica. All activities are continuing as planned. We have a range of placements that include in-person, hybrid, or online. International Schools are fully in-person.

There is no quarantine and the borders are fully open. Most local academies are still operating online or moving to a hybrid format. Some local academies are looking to go back to fully in-class as early as April. We expect to see more schools going back to in-person over the coming months. We have lots of online positions and are assisting teachers that prefer remote working with obtaining those positions.

Eligibility And Fees

Amongst schools, there is a strong preference for candidates from the USA so requirements for US candidates are a bit more flexible. We can accept both degree and non-degree holders from the USA. Candidates from other countries, need to hold a bachelor's degree.

The program fee for our one-month TESOL course and orientation along with guaranteed placement is $2,399.

Accent Clear neutral accent

Applicants should have a clear, neutral accent. Applicants with a strong regional accent should be sent through for pre-screening.

Age 22-40

Applicants should be between the ages of 22 and 40. Applicants outside of this age bracket can be considered on a case-by-case basis but should be sent for pre-screening

Appearance Smart casual

Tattoos: Tattoos must be covered at all times and not seen at school. Piercings: Standard ear piercings for females are ok but all facial piercings must be removed for teaching. Dress: Teachers are asked to dress fairly smartly for teaching.

Background Check Clear background check

Applicants must have a clean criminal background check with no criminal record, previous arrests or charges listed.

Commitment Length

6 months
Other nationalities: 1 year

Candidates must be available to work for this length of time after completing the TESOL course.

Couples friends traveling together

We will aim to place them together but they should be flexible on placement type

We have been able to facilitate couples living together in the same location. We will work with candidates to find a placement option that will work for them staying together. If two in-person placements close to each other aren’t available then we would endeavour to place either both or one person in an online role where they can work remotely and choose where to live so they can stay together even if their friend/partner has a fixed location at a local academy.

USD 1500 - 2700 recommended savings

Applicants need to have sufficient funds to pay for the program fees and other associated costs of the program as well as to cover the cost of personal living expenses including entertainment. The teachers hours will build up over time so extra savings may be needed in the first month after the course.

Medical No comprehensive health check

There is no comprehensive health check needed. Applicants must be in good physical and mental health. In order to get a work-permit, a health check is required, however, because most teachers will be teaching on a tourist visa, a health check won’t likely be required. Teachers must disclose any significant mental or physical health conditions at the point of signup for the program.

Nationality Must be a native English speaker.

Native English speakers from the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa can be accepted.

Placement Locations

San Jose or Remote are most likely

Applicants should be fully open regarding location preferences if they are pursuing an in-person position. The majority of in-peron positions in Costa Rica are in San Jose or other parts of the central valley, away from the coast. If teachers would like the opportunity to travel and live by the coast they can work for an online school and be location independent! We have had a high success rate with meeting preferences for location types so far!

Not allowed

Anyone traveling with a pet will need to take full responsibility for travel arrangements and logistics involving their pet. The pet will not be able to be at the participant accommodation, TESOL course space, any local schools or on the excursions. The participant will be responsible for arranging their own airport pickup and accommodation for the duration of the course and teaching placement afterward. They should understand that it may be more challenging to find suitable accommodations. It will be complex logistically to bring a pet when first travelling. Participants may want to consider taking the course and finding a place to live and then bringing a pet over once they are settled.

No degree needed Other nationalities: Degree needed
All nationalities: In-class TESOL/TEFL onsite required

High school diploma is required. Associates, college diploma, or university degree preferred but not required.

Applicants must take the onsite 120-hour TESOL/TEFL and also participate in the orientation program.

Spanish language

Not required but can be beneficial to applications

Some schools favor applicants that have some Spanish language ability so it is beneficial to start learning as early as possible!
