 Accreditation

OTTSA-e1511426417886The Online TESOL and TEFL Standards Agency is a professional educational organization dedicated to raising teacher-training industry standards, specifically online courses in the teaching of English as a Foreign Language. Accreditation is an incredibly important facet of your online TEFL/TESOL certificate.

Accreditation is a process of validation in which online courses are evaluated. The standards for accreditation are set by a peer review board. The board aids in the evaluation of each potential new course accreditation or the renewals of previously accredited courses and schools.

An important factor in realizing a successful teach abroad program is choosing a reputable TEFL course. TEFL/TESOL courses that have been through the accreditation process are more likely to offer certificates that employers and schools recognize.

It may seem like accreditation has no importance to you as a student, but that could not be further from the truth. When you graduate with your TEFL certificate and look for a teaching job, employers take into consideration the course you took and if it is accredited by a reliable agency.

Accreditation, then, is a system that checks that a course meets a set of standardized (by the Industry) criteria. With an accredited course you know that there is a system of checks being made by the moderators on the course provider to ensure that standards, procedures, and materials are appropriate, fit for their purpose, up to date and regularly updated, and that there are systems in place to monitor and give feedback on student progress.

What is TEFL?

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. You can teach English abroad, or in your home country. It’s sometimes referred to as TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), but they’re the same thing.

Do I need to be a teacher or a native-English speaker to obtain a TEFL certificate?

No. You only need to be a fluent speaker of English.

Non-native speakers will need to take the iTEP Conversation test, and score 70+ on the 25 minute online, on-demand test.

Why should I get a TEFL certificate?

Aside from the fact many countries now require TEFL to obtain a visa or teaching work permit, a TEFL certificate benefits both you and your students.

If you’re feeling nervous or overwhelmed about moving to a foreign country, standing in front of a group of children, and teaching a grammar concept that you never learned well yourself, earning a TEFL certificate can give you confidence and skills.

Other reasons include adding it to your resume and making you more competitive for a teaching position, which could earn you a higher salary.

How long does the course take to complete?

The course is 120 hours and has to be completed in 4 weeks. You will receive each module at the start of a new week and you will have clear instructions for when to submit weekly assignments. Time management can be tough with any course. For our TEFL course, you will receive each module at the start of a new week and you will have clear instructions for when to submit weekly assignments. Concentrate on the week’s work, follow the structure of the course and you should be just fine.

What materials do I need to take the course?

I loved the structure and the detailed course book. I will be able to refer to it when in South Korea. I enjoyed the discussion forum a lot as one learns a lot from other participants in the course. Also, the lesson plan templates provided, were GREAT. Thank you so much!

I love the forum format and that you’ve got the opportunity to see what your peers are getting up to and coming up with in their lesson plans.I like that you’ve always got until Sunday regardless of how many assignments the week has – it helped a lot as I work and study full time and it meant I could do my assignments when it best suited me as opposed to having multiple deadlines.
