Arequipa is a magical Spanish colonial city sitting in a rustic valley in Southern Peru. The city is surrounded by three 19,000 feet (6,000 meters) tall mountains and volcanoes, including the picturesque Misti Volcano. Arequipa was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 due to its amazing architecture and ability to maintain its 500-year heritage. Known as the: "White City", Arequipa was founded in the early 1500s by the Spanish conquistadors. The nickname "the White City" is believed to have been derived from the bright white volcanic rock which was used to build the incredibly beautiful downtown area over a period of 400 years.
Arequipa is also strategically located in Peru. From here, you can easily travel to Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon, Cusco's Machu Pichu, fly to the Amazon basin, climb towering volcanoes, raft on the Chili and Majes rivers, spend a day on the Pacific coast, see the Nazca lines, or travel across the border to explore Bolivia and Northern Chile. Local villages offer visitors a chance to experience native South American customs as well. You are as likely to hear Quechua (the language of the Inca Empire) being spoken as Spanish in many of the surrounding "pueblos". The influence of the Inca Empire and the native customs, traditions, and clothing are still seen wherever you go in the city and throughout the province.

It is important for us to be able to demonstrate the quality of the program to the end-users of TEFL qualification - trainee teachers, future employers, colleges and universities. We seek to do this through reference to internationally accepted standards so that our stakeholders can be confident in the final certificate and what it represents. Our accreditation process includes both internal and external verification, standardization and validation elements.

This 130 hour program is primarily for graduates who wish to gain certification as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Typically course members (trainees) are over 21 years of age and hold a degree from a recognized university. In certain circumstances non-degree holders will be considered for a place if their qualifications and / or experience are regarded as being equivalent to the demands of a degree. Trainees must either be native speakers of English or be able to demonstrate a competence in English by scoring a 70+ on the iTEP Conversation test. You can take the test here.
The content of each of the five components can be described as follows:
We are asked the same questions each day, so we hope this page of Frequently Asked Questions will be helpful to you. Anyone in our office can answer your questions anytime you call. We want you to make informed decisions, and we will be happy to talk to you anytime.
The CTEFL (Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language) is an internationally recognized qualification for the teaching of the English language.
While the course is essentially practical, some evidence of readiness study at a higher education level is necessary in order to cope with the academic side of the course. In some cases, work experience may be accepted in place of qualifications.
Please note that in some countries a 3-year degree is necessary to obtain a work permit and that employers will not be able to legally hire you without one in those places.
No, you do not. We use the universally accepted "communicative approach" to teaching, where English is the only language used in the classroom.
You must be at least 18 years of age for your application to be considered. There is no official upper age limit. Some employers may have a preference for younger teachers, while others tend to prefer more 'mature' teachers.
The majority of our trainees are in their 20's and 30's but we have successfully trained and found employment for graduates in their 40's, 50's and even 60's and therefore welcome applications from all interested parties regardless of age.
The CTEFL is a 4-week course and is very intensive, from morning to evening (course times may vary slightly due to location). We have tried to arrange the course so that you will have the weekends free to relax and explore your chosen area. This does, however, mean that the days are longer and more intensive.
Due to the highly practical content of the CTEFL course, all graduates should have the necessary confidence and ability to embark on their teaching careers and work in a professional manner anywhere in the world.
All certificate courses, however, serve as initial teacher training and those interested in pursuing teaching as a career often go on to take a diploma or MA after a number of years of teaching experience.
Yes. While there is no true international body for TEFL courses, internationally accepted guidelines state that the course must have 100 hours of input, 6 hours of teaching practice and is externally monitored. Our CTEFL course has, in fact, 130 hours of input and a minimum of 10 hours teaching practice as well as being externally monitored.
Excellent. At present, there is a shortage of certified, qualified teachers worldwide and consequently, the majority of our trainees have found employment by the time they complete the course.
Because of mining, fishing and tourism the country can boast one of the fastest growing economies in the world. A native speaker of English who has earned a TEFL certificate can easily find work in Peru. While salaries may seem low, the cost of living is equally low. If you are interested in teaching in Peru we will guide you in your search in Arequipa, Cusco, Tacna, Puno and Lima. There is no cost for this service.
Yes. All graduates receive individual counseling and assistance with finding a teaching job. As GeoVisions Foundation is an international organization it has contacts with many schools worldwide and can even often place graduates within its own network of language schools.
GeoVisions Foundation will help with all aspects of job seeking from CV/resume construction and interview techniques
The food of Arequipa has become famous world wide for being one of the most varied and delicious in Peru. It has the greatest diversity compared to other areas thanks to its countryside and extensive coastline. The use of seasonings and preparation methods, both Andean and European, including peppers and chili, fruits and vegetables, beef, lamb, pork and a large variety of fresh and saltwater seafood make it a treat to anyone who loves food.
When visiting Peru you should dress for mild weather. Not too hot and not too cold. The temperature ranges from low sixties to eighties. So pack some warm weather clothes like t-shirts and shorts/jeans. Then bring along a light jacket or sweater for the evenings. Make sure you do bring warm pajamas though because it does get cold at night at times. It does rain in Peru when you are in the higher regions. Make sure you bring a rain coat, some waterproof shoes and warm clothes.
Peru is in the Southern hemisphere so the seasons are reversed. December is in summer and June is in winter. The climate in Arequipa is warm and rather dry throughout the year. Arequipa lies alongside the southernmost tip of Peru’s desert coast and enjoys plenty of sunny weather, with daytime temperatures rarely dipping much below 70 degrees.
Homestays from US$ 300 to US$ 400 (incl. 2 meals per day).
3 star private hostel: US$ 500 to US$ 550.
Shared apartment fully furnished private room: US$ 350, shared room: US$ 250.
The cost of living in Arequipa is low compared to more developed countries and large cities. For those wanting to explore traditional Peru, a private room/private bath with a Peruvian family can be found for as little as $150 per month. Many trainees and teachers share large apartments near our center for very reasonable rates.
Most local restaurants offer lunch specials and pricing for meals consisting of a main course, salad, dessert and drink for as little as $2. Taxis cost about $1.50 all over the center of the city and bus transportation is approximately 40 cents.
Certified TEFL teachers seeking immediate employment in Peru will find many opportunities in private language centers and universities throughout the country. Pay may be a bit lower than in other countries, however, the cost of living is, too!
There are many opportunities to travel throughout the mountains and deep canyons of southern Peru. Lake Titicaca and the floating islands of the Uros native people, Cusco and the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, the Nazca lines and mountain climbing through the Andes are all offered for weekend excursions. Local beach villages are reachable by bus.
At the weekend you can go to local village festivals where you will be able to interact with local people who wear traditional Peruvian clothing, work with alpacas and llamas and speak Quechua and Spanish equally. You can also volunteer to teach underprivileged children who live at the base of the volcano near the edge of the city.
